Rossi Stars In Valentine's Day Massacre
i absolutely love this report of the match.. haha..
sounds really promising..
i cant wait to see solskjaer perform like he did in this match in the first team..
FA Premier Reserve League North
St Andrews, 14 February, 2006
Birmingham City 0
Manchester United 4
Rossi (6, 17, 73), Gibson (40)
Giuseppe Rossi hit his second hat-trick in three games - his fourth of the season so far - as United romped to victory against Birmingham at St Andrews.
Darron Gibson also netted his second Reserves goal of the season as Rene Meulensteen's side gave the perfect riposte to last week's home defeat to Aston Villa.
At the centre of much of United's fine play was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who looked extremely sharp and was desperately unlucky not to add his name to the scoresheet.
Eager to exorcise the ghosts of the Villa defeat, United burst out of the traps and were quickly ahead through Rossi.
Solskjaer, occupying the left midfield berth, worked space for himself on the byline before pulling the ball back into the path of the little Italian, who had the simple task of slotting home from eight yards.
The simplicity of the opening goal was replicated in Rossi's second, but was embellished by a superb trail of one-touch passing which ended with another calm finish from the striker.
Ritchie Jones fed Rossi with his back to goal around 40 yards out. The Italian's instant pass went straight to Solskjaer, who in turn played in Kieran Lee. The left-back's inch-perfect ball dissected the static Birmingham defence and allowed Rossi to double United's advantage with a gentle chip over goalkeeper Adam Legzdins.
The diminutive 19-year-old was involved again in United's third. This time his free-kick rebounded from the defensive wall, only for Gibson to drive it back with interest from 25 yards.
Although Legzdins got a touch, he couldn't prevent the young Irish midfielder notching his second strike of the season for Meulensteen's side.
The game was effectively over by half-time but United, as ever came out after the interval hungry for more goals.
Solskjaer smashed a clever volley against the near post from a tight angle and Mark Howard turned the Norwegian's cross against the other upright from six yards before Rossi completed his treble.
In trademark fashion, he picked the ball up in midfield, spun away from his marker and charged at the backpedalling defence before smashing a left-footed effort in at the near post from 15 yards.
Legzdins denied Rossi a fourth by smothering his close-range chip, then managed to partially parry Solskjaer's close-range effort before Danny Rose headed the rebound against the post.
The Norwegian blazed over in stoppage time after Phil Marsh's superb through-ball, but a goal was the only absentee in an ever-sharper performance from the fans' favourite.
The win leaves United four points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough with a game in hand, and eight points clear of third-placed Villa.
United: Steele, Bardsley, K Lee (Marsh, 59), M Howard, Piqué, Gibson, Neumayr, R Jones, Campbell (Rose, 73), Rossi, Solskjaer.
Substitutes: Zieler, Cathcart, Moran.
